It can always happen – a nail or a piece of broken glass has drilled into the tread or the air pressure has not been checked for a long time, so that the tire burst in the middle of the journey. This is not pleasant and can even have very unsightly consequences.

It is therefore advisable to carry an emergency spare tire. There are different types of replacement tires. A fully dimensioned spare wheel has the advantage that it looks like wheels fitted to a car and saves you having to drive to the workshop in the event of a breakdown. You can’t see the tire, so it doesn’t affect the look of the car. One disadvantage is that the spare wheel takes away storage space if there is no storage space and must be bought as a fifth copy when buying new tires. If you carry an unsuitable spare wheel, you must first check whether it is legally permissible.

There is also the option of carrying an emergency bike. They usually have a lower profile depth and should only be used temporarily. If an emergency wheel is smaller than other tires, it must be inflated to the appropriate size. If you want to save space, there are also foldable emergency bikes. However, these are only recommended for short distances and are also more cumbersome to use. The only advantage they have is the little storage space they take up.

For Short Distances Only!
However, you can only drive short distances with your spare wheel and it is not for long use. It should be enough that you drive with it to the nearest workshop or place where you can change tires to a new summer tire or a winter tire depending on what you have on the car.

In the past, it was common for the spare tire to be the same tire as the ones on the car and thus could be used longer distances. Nowadays it is more common with emergency wheels, which are lighter and narrower than a regular tire. There is also usually a maximum speed of this emergency wheel. The spare tire is usually located under the luggage compartment floor or under the car. On larger cars such as Jeeps and Vans, the spare wheel is often mounted on the back of the car.

You should check the spare tire every now and then. Many riders forget about it and once they have a puncture and have to use the spare tire, it is punctured on it too. You should therefore regularly check the air pressure on your spare tire. Be careful when checking your car’s regular tires though. It is also good to have bolts that fit the rim of the spare tire in your car.

What You Do When Get Punctured?
When you are out and one of your tire gets punctured you have two options, either you use your spare tire or your emergency wheel. Make sure you have a jack in the car so you can change your tire yourself. When changing tires you should go to a workshop as soon as possible. Your other option is to use tire sealant or repair kit to temporarily repair your tire.

This only works if you have a tubeless tire. The tire sealant is like a kind of foam, which clogs the puncture again. You should, regardless of whether you choose to use a spare wheel, an emergency wheel or to repair the tire, temporarily go to a workshop relatively promptly. Driving long distances with any of these options is not recommended. You can usually repair the tire.
